ALGIERS- An arms cache containing 52 ammunition boxes and 1,449 bullets of 23mm calibre was discovered Monday during a search patrol by a detachment of the People's National Army near the border in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, said Tuesday the Ministry of National Defence in a statement.
"As part of actions to fight terrorism and secure borders, and following tips, a detachment of the People's National Army discovered, yesterday 30 January 2017 during a search patrol near the border in Bordj Badji Mokhtar (6th Military Region), an arms cache containing 52 ammunition boxes and 1,449 bullets of 23mm calibre," said the statement.
Other Army detachments arrested two individuals supporting terrorist groups in Boumerdes (1st Militay Region) and destroyed a bomb-making workshop in Skikda (5th Military Region), added the Ministry's statement.
In addition, as part of actions to secure borders and fight against organized crime, an Army detachment and a unit of the National Gendarmerie, in coordination with Customs services, arrested three drug traffickers in their possession of 197kg of cannabis resin in Sidi Bel-Abbes, while 6.4kg of cannabis resin was seized in Bechar (3rd Military Region).
In Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar and In Guezzam, Army detachment arrested 10 smugglers and seized 6.3 tonnes of foodstuffs, 2,000 litres of fuel, 5 power generators, 4 pneumatic drills, 3 metal detectors and a satellite phone.
Army detachments intercepted 38 illegal immigrants of different African nationalities in Bechar, Adrar, Ouargla and In Guezzam.
