ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika said Sunday that Abdelhamid Ben Badis' extensive knowledge of religious and life issues, opening to the culture of his era, his gender equality approach and his vigorous defence of national identity earned him "the status a universal man and a reformer by excellence."
The head of State underlined the scholar's "ruthless fight against bid'ah (negative innovations and heresies), sanctimoniousness, fanaticism, superstition and other similar scourges.
President of the Republic emphasized the importance to get committed to Sheikh's reforming approach and his "middle way."
"Moderation is a shield preserving our Muslim people against foreign ideas," he stressed.
President Bouteflika urged Algerian scholars and Imams to work for the "dissemination of the culture of moderation," which, he said, is the characteristic of Islam, religion of fraternity, peace and humanism."
