Counterterrorism: Bolstering region's capacities to better address threats

ALGIERS- Boosting the capacities of the region, which is more and more targeted by terrorism, will help in "better" face the relevant numerous threats, Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel said Monday in Algiers.

"The efforts to step up the capacities of the region, more and more the target of terrorist attacks, is contributing to the collective efforts and will make it possible for the region to better deal locally with the several threats facing it," Messahel said at the first plenary meeting of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) Working Group on Capacity Building in West Africa.

In the first place, he said, there is the foreign terrorist fighters' coming back, a phenomenon that is expected to "increase as a result of the military defeats of Daesh troops in the armed conflict zones in Syria and Iraq in particular."

In addition to "more effective measures" to secure the border and to reduce and hamper the movement and mobility of foreign terrorist fighters, "there is an urgent need for regional and international cooperation to give priority to curbing this threat," and prevent that terrorists make a retreat into the areas that suffer the most from the lack of resources and institutional capacities to fight back."
