ALGIERS- Eight homemade bombs were destroyed Thursday in Tebessa (650-km east of Algiers), said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement on Friday.

"As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the People's National Army destroyed, on 23 March 2017 in Tebessa (5th Military Region), eight homemade bombs," said the statement.

As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, units of the Border Guards and the National Gendarmerie "arrested three drug traffickers and seized 119kg of cannabis resin in Tlemcen and Naama (2nd Military Region)," added the statement.

In Bordj Badji Mokhtar (6th Military Region) and Djanet (4th Military Region), Army detachments "arrested six smugglers and seized two all-terrain vehicles, nine metal detectors and two power generators, while units of the Border Guards thwarted attempts to smuggle 12,850 litres of fuel in Souk-Ahras, Tebessa and El-Tarf (5th Military Region)," said the Ministry's statement.

ALGIERS- Terrorist H. Osman has been captured Monday by a detachment of the People's National Army in Timiaouine, near the southern border, said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and following tips, an Army detachment of Bordj Badji Mokhtar (6th Military Region) captured on Monday morning terrorist H. Osman and seized a Kalashnikov submachine gun and a quantity of munitions, during a reconnaissance patrol in Timiaouine, near the country's southern border," said the statement.

ALGIERS- Fifteen (15) terrorist bunkers were destroyed Saturday, in Ain Defla, by a detachment of the People’s National Army while an individual supporting terrorist groups was apprehended in Khenchela said Sunday, the ministry of National Defence in a communiqué.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the People’s National army destroyed, on 18 March 2017, in Ain Defla (1st military region), 15 bunkers for terrorists containing foodstuffs and four (04) binoculars,  while units of the National Gendarmerie apprehended one individual supporting terrorist groups in Khenchela (5th military region),” said the communiqué.

Furthermore, and as part of the fight against organized crime, units of the National Gendarmerie and the border guards seized in Tlemcen (2nd military region), a quantity of cannabis resin amounting to 100 kilograms and 2,800 litres of fuel, while a detachment of the People’s National Army seized a truck loaded with nine (09) tons of foodstuffs in Ain Guezzam.”

On the other hand, units of the border guards “thwarted, in Annaba (5th military region), attempts at illegal immigration of 41 people aboard a hand-made craft, while 12 illegal immigrants from various nationalities were apprehended in Ain Temouchent ,  Adrar and Ain Guezzam,” added the communiqué.

Police dismantle ISIS cell in Mostaganem

MOSTAGANEM – Police forces of Mostaganem province have dismantled on Thursday a terrorist cell belonging to the Self-Proclaimed Group ISIS/ Daech", they said on Friday.

The cell, which is composed of nine members aged between 20 and 58 all from Mostaganem (355 west of Algiers), is specialized in recruiting young people via the social networks and convincing them to join ISIS group in Syria, added the source.

The security forces have tracked the members for more than a month before arresting them and bringing them to justice.

Seven members of the cell were jailed, the eighth one placed under court supervision while the ninth was sent a direct summon to appear, added the security services.

Six homemade mines destroyed in Tebessa

ALGIERS- Six (06) homemade mines were destroyed Wednesday, in Tebessa, by a detachment of the People’s National Army, said Thursday a communiqué of the National Defence Ministry.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the People’s National Army destroyed, on 15 March 2017 in Tebessa (5th Military Region), six (06) homemade mines,” said the source.

As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, a detachment of the People’s National Army, in coordination with the units of the National Gendarmerie, arrested in Ain Temouchent (2nd Military Region) six drug traffickers and seized 4 vehicles and 19.5kg of cannabis resin, added the source.

Detachments of the People’s National Army and units of the National Gendarmerie and border guards arrested in different operations, carried out in Tlemcen, Tiaret, Bechar and Tamanrasset, a total of 72 illegal immigrants of different nationalities, said the communiqué.

ALGIERS- The minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel said that the Algerian experience in the fight against terrorism and extremism is now a “reference” at the level of the United Nations (UN).

“The Algerian experience is now a reference at the United Nations. Algeria has already submitted a document on the ways to fight radicalism,” said Messahel who was, Sunday, the guest of the national’s television’s “Hiwar essaa.”

In this regard, he underlined Algeria’s efforts in the matter through the organization of several workshops on the role of democracy in the fight against radicalism, insisting on the key role of the Algerian diplomacy in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in the light of conflicts and crises around the country.

ALGIERS- A heavy machine gun and quantity of munitions were recovered, and three hiding places for terrorist were destroyed by a detachment of the People's National Army near the Mount Boukhaled, between the provinces of Bouira and Bordj Bou Arreridj, said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and following tips, an Army detachment of Bouira (1st Military Region) recovered, on the afternoon of 9 March 2017, an FMPK heavy machine gun, 2 ammunition belts as well as 185 bullets, and destroyed three hiding places for terrorists near the Mount Boukhaled, between the provinces of Bouira and Bordj Bou Arreridj," said the Ministry's statement.

ALGIERS- Five (05) bunkers for terrorists were destroyed Wednesday in Setif and Jijel by detachments of the People’s National Army while an individual supporting terrorist groups was arrested in Algiers, said Thursday National Defence Ministry in a communiqué.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, detachments of the People’s National Army destroyed, on 8 March 2017, five (05) bunkers for terrorists in Setif an Jijel (5th Military Region), while units of the National Gendarmerie arrested one individual supporting terrorist groups in Algiers (1st Military Region),” said the source.

As part of the fight against organized crime, a detachment of the People’s National Army “seized a quantity of cannabis resin amounting to 95.1 kilograms in Tindouf (3rd Military Region) while another detachment arrested in El Oued (4th Military Region) one smuggler in a truck loaded with 40 quintals of tobacco.”

In Bordj Badji Mokhtar and In Guezzam (6th Military Region), detachments of the People’s National Army “arrested nine (09) smugglers and seized two (02) all-terrain vehicles, two (02) pairs of binoculars, four (04) metal detectors, three (03) pneumatic drills and three (03) generating sets, while 63 illegal immigrants of different nationalities were arrested in Tlemcen (2nd Military Region), Ouargla and Ghardaia (4th Military Region),” said the source.

ALGIERS- An arms cache was discovered near the border region in In-Guezzam (Tamanrasset, 1970-km south of Algiers) by a detachment of the People's National Army, said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and during a reconnaissance patrol in the border region of In-Guezzam, in the province of Tamanrasset (6th Military Region), an Army detachment discovered, today 4 March 2017, an arms cache," said the statement.

The arms cache contains "six Kalashnikov submachine guns, an FMPK heavy machine gun, an RPG-7 rocket-launcher, a Simonov semiautomatic rifle, two RPG-7 rockets, twenty grenades, nine smoke grenades and seventeen magazines for Kalashnikov submachine guns, as well as a large quantity of munitions of different calibres," added the Ministry's statement.

ALGIERS- Two (02) shelters for terrorists containing detonation tools were destroyed Friday in Setif by a detachment of the People’s National Army, while an individual supporting terrorist groups were arrested in Boumerdes, said Saturday National Defence Ministry in a communiqué.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the People’s National Army discovered and destroyed, on 3 March 2017, in the north of Setif (5th Military Region) two shelters for terrorists containing detonation tools, medicines and other objects while another detachment arrested, in coordination with the National Police services, one (01) individual supporting terrorist groups in Boumerdes (1st Military Region),” said the source.

As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, the units of the National Gendarmerie and border guards “arrested in Tlemcen (2nd Military Region) one Moroccan drug trafficker and seized two (02) quintals and 8 kilograms of cannabis resin.”

A detachment of the People’s National Army, in coordination with the units of the Algerian Customs, “arrested eight (08) drug traffickers in three (03) tourist vehicles and seized 1.4 kilograms of cocaine in Ain Temouchent (2nd Military Region).”

ALGIERS- An arms cache containing eight RPG-2 shells and a quantity of munitions was discovered in Tizi Ouzou on Wednesday, said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement on Thursday.

"As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the People's National Army discovered, in Tizi Ouzou (1st Military Region) on 1 March 2017, an arms cache containing eight RPG-2 shells, a quantity of munitions of different calibres and explosives materials, while an individual supporting terrorism was arrested in Blida," said the statement.

As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, units of the Border Guards seized, in Tlemcen (2nd Military Region), 4 quintals and 25 kg of cannabis resin, while an Army detachment seized 80 quintals of tobacco in El Oued (4th Military Region), added the statement.

In Tamanrasset and In-Guezzam (6th Military Region), Army detachments and units of the National Gendarmerie intercepted five smugglers and seized two all-terrain vehicles, a truck, 31.5 tonnes of foodstuffs, two metal detectors, five power generators and three jackhammers, said the Ministry's statement.

In separate operations in Tamanrasset, Tlemcen, Adrar and Biskra, Army detachments and units of the National Gendarmerie arrested 72 illegal immigrants of different nationalities, concluded the statement.

 ALGIERS - An arms cache and ammunition, containing Kalachnikov machine pistols and a heavy machine gun have been discovered Thursday in Adrar by a detachment of the People's National Army, said the National Defence Ministry (MDN), in a communiqué.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and the efforts to ensure border areas security, and during a reconnaissance patrol, a detachment of the Army forces of the military sector of Adrar/3rd Military Region discovered Thursday an arms cache containing 40 Kalachnikov machine pistols, one 14.5 millimetre calibre heavy machine gun, 44 magazines for Kalachnikov machine pistol as well as large quantity of ammunitions (1686 bullets) of different calibres," the same source added.

"This new operation reflects the constant vigilance and response capacity of the People's National Army, throughout the Algerian territory to thwart all attacks on the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Ministry communiqué said.

ALGIERS – The nine terrorists neutralized Tuesday by the Army forces in Tizi Ouzou, have been identified, said Wednesday the National Defence Ministry in a communiqué.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and following the combing operation conducted on 28 February 2017 by Army forces near the commune of Azeffoun, in the province of Tizi Ouzou (1st Military Region), 9 terrorists were neutralized, and 9 firearms and ammunition recovered," said the source.

The terrorists have been identified as “B. Mohamed alias "Ishak", who joined the terrorist groups in 1994, M. Belkacem alias "Souraka", having joint terrorist groups in 2006, T. Sid Ali alias “Abou Omeir", having joint the terrorist groups in 2010, B. Ahcène alias "Abderahim", C. Ahmed  alias "Katada", S. Abdenour alias "Abdelkhalek,  L. Samir alias "La Glacière", A. Ibrahim alias "Abdelouahed" and C. Salim  alias "Abdenacer."

"Such concrete outcomes illustrate the vigilance and the values of abnegation, and dedication to the country and the firm determination of the members of the People’s National Army and the different security services in their efforts, aiming at spreading the security, the serenity and the stability in our country," concluded the National Defence Ministry communiqué.

ALGIERS- Two individuals supporting terrorist groups were arrested Tuesday in Tebessa (650-km east of Algiers) and four bunkers were destroyed in Jijel (345-km east of Algiers) by detachments of the People's National Army, said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement on Wednesday.

"As part of the fight against terrorism, detachments of the People's National Army arrested two individuals supporting terrorist groups, on 28 February 2017, in Tebessa (5th Military Region) and destroyed four bunkers in Jijel and four homemade bombs in Skikda," said the statement.

"As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, units of the National Gendarmerie intercepted a drug trafficker in possession of 43kg of cannabis resin in Tiaret (2nd Military Region)," added the statement.

In Tlemcen, Bechar, Adrar, Ouargla, Biskra, Ghardaia and Djanet, detachments of the Army and units of the National Gendarmerie and the Border Guards arrested 84 illegal immigrants of different nationalities, while in Tamanrasset (6th Military Region), 17 smugglers were arrested and two all-terrain vehicles, 900 litres of fuel and 5 metal detectors were seized," concluded the statement.

Nine terrorists neutralized in Tizi Ouzou

ALGIERS- Nine terrorists were neutralized by a detachment of the People's National Army during a cordon operation in Tizi Ouzou on Tuesday, said the Ministry of National Defence in a statement.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and following tips, an Army detachment of Tizi Ouzou (1st Military Region) neutralized nine terrorists, this morning 28 February 2017, during a cordon and search operation near the commune of Azeffoun, in the province of Tizi Ouzou," said the statement.

"This quality operation, which is still ongoing, has also resulted in the recovery of two Kalashnikov guns, a rifle with telescopic sight, a pump gun, five hunting rifles, a quantity of munitions and various objects," concluded the Ministry's statement.

ALGIERS- The terrorist killed during a combing operation a detachment of the People’s National Army conducted Saturday in Jijel was identified, said Monday the National Defence Ministry (MDN) in a communiqué.

"As part of the fight against terrorism, the terrorist who was killed on 25 February 2017 near Mechta de Hedabla, commune of Ziama Mansouria, in the province of Jijel (5th Military Region) has been identified as L. Louanès alias "Taher Beghila," the same source added.

During the operation, a Simonov semi-automatic rifle, a grenade and a quantity of ammunition were recovered.

In Skikda (5th MR), an Army detachment "discovered and destroyed two terrorist hiding places while in Tebessa (5th MR), another detachment, in coordination with the National Security services, arrested three individuals supporting terrorist groups."

Moreover, as part of the fight against illegal immigration and organized crime, detachments to the ANP and units of the National Gendarmerie "apprehended eight smugglers and 33 clandestine immigrants of different nationalities in Oran, Tlemcen, Djanet, Illizi, In Guezzam and Constantine, while six metal detectors were seized,” concluded the ministry communiqué.

ALGIERS- Two individuals supporting terrorist groups were arrested Saturday in Relizane by detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP), said Sunday the National Defence Ministry in a communiqué.

"As part of the fight against terrorism, detachments of the People’s National Army arrested on 25 February 2017, two individuals supporting terrorist groups in Rélizane (2nd Military Region) and destroyed 6 home-made bombs in Skikda (5th Military Region)," added the same source.

Moreover,  and as part of the fight against smuggling and the organized crime, "elements of the National Gendarmerie seized 10.6 kilograms of cannabis resin in Abadla, in the province of Bechar (3rd Military Region)."

Another Army detachment "seized a truck, an all-terrain vehicle, 1.5 tonnes of food products and 1,400 litres of edible oil in Tamanrasset and In Guezzam (6th MR)." 

Army detachments and units of the National Gendarmerie "have apprehended 62 illegal immigrants of various nationalities in Bechar, Ouargla, Djanet, In Guezzam and Tamanrasset."

Counterterrorism: One terrorist killed in Jijel

ALGIERS- One terrorist was killed Saturday in the commune of Ziama Mansouria, province of Jijel, by a detachment of the People’s National Army, said a communiqué of the National Defence Ministry (MDN).

"As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the People's National Army operating in the Jijel operational area (5th Military Region) eliminated one terrorist on 25 February 2017, following an combing operation, conducted near the Mechta de Hedabla, commune of Ziama Mansouria," said the same source.

"This operation, which is still ongoing, resulted in the recovery of a Simonov semi-automatic rifle, a grenade and a quantity of ammunition," said the source.

ALGIERS- Detachments of People’s National Army arrested Thursday, in Adrar, two individuals supporting terrorist groups  and also destroyed two caches for terrorists in Boumerdes, said Friday a communiqué of the National Defence Ministry.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, detachments of the People’s National Army arrested, on 23 February 2017, two (02) individuals supporting terrorist groups in Adrar (3rd Military Region) and destroyed two (02) caches for terrorists in Boumerdes (1st Military Region),” said the communiqué.

As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, units of the border guards “seized, in Bab El Assa, the province of Tlemcen (2nd Military Region), a quantity of 86 kilograms of cannabis resin, while units of the National Gendarmerie seized 2,499 units of tobacco in Tiaret (2nd Military Region).”

A detachment of the People’s National Army “arrested four (04) smugglers in In Guezzam (6th Military Region) and seized one  all-terrain vehicle, one generating set and one pneumatic drill.”

In the same regard, a detachment of the People’s National Army and units of the border guards “foiled attempts to smuggle 9,544 litres of fuel in Tindouf, Tebessa and El Tared, while 17illegal immigrants of different African nationalities were arrested in Tlemcen, Tiaret, Sidi Bel Abbès and Relizane (2nd Military Region),” concluded the source.

ALGIERS- Democracy in Algeria was a strategic choice in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, said Thursday in Algiers Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel.

During the audience granted to a US delegation made up of senior officials and top Army officers, who are on a visit to Algeria, Messahel said "democracy in Algeria is a strategic choice in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, and driven by the same vision in the fight against radicalization."

Messahel added that the "consolidation of democratic principles" is based on an approach advocated by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, with a view to establishing the rule of law and democratic values in the practices of institutions.

"Algeria is ready to share this experience with other countries, as it has done for deradicalization," said Messahel.
