PARIS-  Anti-colonial historian Andre Nouschi, who published several researches on Algeria and the Mediterranean region died last 7 March aged 94, his relatives said Friday.

The death was confirmed Thursday evening by Sophia Antipolis University of Nice in which he was teacher of contemporary history.

He founded the Center of Modern and Contemporary Mediterranean (CMMC) in 1968 and the magazine the Cahiers of the Méditerranée in 1971.

Born in Constantine on 10 December 1922, André Nouschi, an expert in contemporary history, focused his research on the economic history of Algeria during the 1940s and 1950s. His thesis, debated in 1959 under the supervision of Charles-André Jullien, was under the theme of "Survey of the living standards of the Constantine rural population, from the invasion to 1919."

In Algiers University where he was professor, he had published in 1985 the "Correspondence of Doctor Vital (of Constantine) with Ismaël Urbain".

In 1985, he left Algiers for Tunis after being threatened by extremists. In 1960, he published with Yves Lacoste and Andre Prenant “The History of Algeria: Past and Present.”

Andre Nouschi has also denounced the Israeli policy in Palestine and has studied the history of the oil  exploitation in North Africa and the Middle East.
