GHARDAIA (Algeria)- The 49th national carpet festival opened Saturday in Ghardaia (600-km south of Algiers), with a wide range of activities including the traditional parade of carts decorated with colourful carpets.
The festival was kicked off by the minister of National Planning, Tourism and Craft Industry, Abdelwahab Nouri.
The opening show of the carpet festival featured a large number of artists and folk bands from various parts of the province.
The cultural, artistic and economic event, coinciding with spring's school holidays, will shed light on the rich local, traditional art and the works of carpet weavers.
It is meant to contribute to promoting tourist and craft industries and boosting cultural activities in the region.
