Algeria invests up to USD50 bn in water resources

ALGIERS- Algeria has invested about 50 billion dollars, over the past few years, in the execution of big infrastructure projects meant for water storage, in order to avoid a crisis in drinking water supply, and connection of citizens to the sewage system, Minister of Water resources and Environment Abdelwahab Nouri said Monday.

Algeria has spent nearly 50 billion dollars on water resources projects, "an average of seven to eight billion dollars a year," the minister said in reply to questions by the members of the Lower House's Committee on Finance and Budget, during discussions about the bill on budget regulation for 2013.

The session, chaired by the committee's chairman, Mahjoub Bedda, was attended by Minister for Relations with Parliament Tahar Khaoua.

The minister said one of the historic decision taken by Algeria, at the beginning of the third millennium, is the building of 84 dams for water storage and 13 sea water desalination plants, with a production capacity of more than 2.3 million m3 a day, in addition to other projects nationwide.
