Road accidents: 33 killed, 403 injured in one week

ALGIERS- Thirty-three people lost their lives and 403 others were injured in 228 road accidents across the country from 15 to 21 March 2016, said the National Gendarmerie.

The province of Algiers tops the list with 15 accidents, followed by Blida and Msila with 14 accidents in each.

The human factor remains the main cause of these road accidents with 85%, followed by pedestrians' recklessness, mechanical failure and bad road conditions, added the source.

Road accidents: 31 killed, over 1000 injured in one week

ALGIERS- Thirty-one people lost their lives and 1,008 others were injured in road accidents that occurred between 28 February and 5 March nationwide, said the Civil Protection in a statement.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Tebessa where four people were killed and 21 others were injured.

Road accidents: 34 dead, 1244 injured in one week, says Civil Protection

ALGIERS- Thirty four (34) people were killed and 1,244 others injured in 1,073 road accidents that occurred between 21 to 27 December throughout the national territory, the Civil Protection said Tuesday in a communiqué.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Biskra (425-km southeast of Algiers) with three (3) dead and 36 injured, added the source.

Beginning of training programme of youth in international relations

ALGIERS- The United Nations programme in Algeria organized Monday, in Algiers, a conference on the training of youth in the fields of international relations and diplomacy, with the participation of 157 youth, representing 38 provinces.

This conference, organized under the slogan “Together to Invest in Algerian Youth,” aims at training participants in international negotiations to strengthen their communication skills by simulating the work of various organisms of the United Nations, said the founder of the Arif Abdeljalil programme.

The meeting aims at acquiring detailed knowledge on the United Nations system, international relations and the diplomatic exercise, by simulating the work of the international Security Council in the treatment of the Yemeni issue, while other participants will examine the issue of the participation of youth in the achievement of development goals, by simulating the work of the UN’s Economic and Social Council.

This conference, whose works continue until 30th December, will allow the youth to acquire basic notions on diplomacy to find solutions to international crises, improve competitive spirit and team work.

The conference is organized by the Algerian Higher School of Business, in coordination with the United-Nations-Algeria Information Center.

38,000 ha of forests destroyed by fire in 2014

ALGIERS- Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Abdelouahab Nouri said Thursday in Algiers that the forest spaces destroyed by fires considerably dropped to 38,000 hectares in 2014 compared to 2012.

During a Lower House session devoted to oral questions, Nouri said that the Directorate General of Forests (DGF) recorded 38,000 hectares of forests destroyed by fire in 2014 against 99,000 in 2012.

This decline was made possible through the efforts of the staff of the forests general directorate in coordination with those of the civil protection which mobilized 504 mobile brigades and 369 detection centers that enabled rapid localization of risk zones.

Algeria partakes in Arab International Women's Forum meeting in Egypt

ALGIERS- Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women's Affairs Mounia Meslem Si Amer represents Algeria at the 7th meeting of the High Council of the Arab International Women's Forum (AIWF) which will be held on Wednesday in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh, said Tuesday a ministry statement.

The review and the adoption of the AIWF reports for the past two years, and the review and adoption of its Action Plan for the 2016-2019 period are on the i agenda of the session, said the source.

Road accidents: 35 killed, 1019 injured in one week

ALGIERS- Thirty-five people lost their lives and 1,019 others were injured in road accidents in one week in several provinces of the country, said Tuesday the Civil Protection.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Algiers, where four people were killed and 114 others were injured, said the source.

Meslem at OAFLA’s 14th extraordinary general meeting in Johannesburg

ALGIERS- Minister of Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs Mounia Meslem Si Amer will represent Algeria in the 14th extraordinary general meeting of the Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA).

The meeting’ theme will be based “The strengthening of partners to put an end to AIDS by 2013 and to empower women vis-a-vis their right to health,” said National Solidarity Ministry in a communiqué.

Algeria, Kuwait willing to strengthen theircooperation in social action

ALGIERS- Algeria and Kuwait have announced Sunday in Algiers their common desire to strengthen their cooperation in the field of social action, a statement from the Ministry of National Solidarity, Family and Women Affairs said.

The twosides expressed their will the audience granted by Minister of National Solidarity, Mounia Meslem Si Amer and Kuwaiti ambassador to Algeria Saud Faisal El-Dewich at his request, the source said.

TheKuwaiti ambassador offered thanks of the Government and the people of Kuwait to Algeria for the "warm" welcome to the mission of the Kuwaiti ship "The crossing of Hope", which stayed in June 2014 in Algeria.

The mission of youth with disabilities "carried a humanitarian message to the people and to governments, raising their awareness on the need for integration of disabled people within their societies," the source added.

On this occasion, the two sides exchanged experiences of the two countries in the field of social action.

Furthermore, the Minister received the Ambassador of Malaysia to Algeria, Mohd Farid Sufian, at his request, said another statement from the ministry.

Both sides reviewed the experiences of their respective countries in the areas of social and humanitarian action.


They also expressed their willingness to strengthen relations of cooperation, in particular through support to the training of social categories in difficulty like assisted childhood, women in distress, the disabled and the elderly.

Road accidents: 65 killed, 688 injured in one week

ALGIERS- Sixty-five people were killed and 688 others were injured in 381 road accidents that occurred from 10 to 16 March in different provinces of the country, said Wednesday the National Gendarmerie in a weekly report.

The province of Algiers tops the list with 25 road accidents, followed by Tipasa (22 accidents) and Oran (17 accidents), said the source.

These accidents were mainly caused by speeding, dangerous overtaking, tailgating and pedestrian carelessness, added the source.

 

Seizure of large quantity of smuggled drugs, medical supplies in Boumerdes and Algiers

ALGIERS- The police brigade of Boudouaou (Boumerdes, 50 km east of Algiers) seized a large quantity of smuggled pharmaceutical and medical equipment and arrested two persons in Boudouaou and Algiers, Command of the National Gendarmerie said Saturday in a statement.

The members of the brigade arrested one of the accused who was selling a large batch of Viagra pills and uncontrolled cosmetics of different brands in the market of Boudouaou.

Continuing their investigations, the police investigators arrested his accomplice and seized in an authorized shop located in Oued Semar (Algiers), 8,203 Viagra pills, 128 tubes of ointment, tonics of different brands and 32 medical devices fraudulently imported.

Road accidents: 44 killed, 477 injured in one week

ALGIERS- A total of 44 people were killed and 477 others were injured in 278 road accidents nationwide from 20 to 26 January, said Wednesday the National Gendarmerie in a communiqué.

The provinces of Algiers and Boumerdes top the list with 13 accidents each, followed by M’sila and Ain Defla (12) then Blida with 10 accidents, said the source.

The majority of these accidents are due to human factor and the condition of the roads, added the source. 

Road accidents: 11 killed, 14 injured on Saturday

ALGIERS- Eleven people were killed and fourteen others were injured in many road accidents that occurred Saturday November 1st, said Sunday the Civil Protection in a communiqué.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Oran with four people killed and four others injured following an accident between two light vehicles on the road relating Sidi Maarouf to Hassi Amer in the commune of Bir El Djir.

Road accidents: 49 killed, 1240 injured in one week

ALGIERS- Forty-nine people lost their lives and 1240 others were injured in 1111 road accidents that occurred in 22 provinces of the country on 4-10 January, the Civil Protection announced on Tuesday.

The province of El Tarf tops the list in terms of number of victims with 6 people killed and 21 injured in 18 road accidents. 

Road accidents: 69 killed, 703 injured in one week

ALGIERS- Sixty-nine people lost their lives and 703 others were injured in road accidents from 7 to 13 October, said Wednesday the National Gendarmerie.

The province of M'sila tops the list with 23 accidents, followed by Bejaia (16 accidents) and Medea (15).

Dangerous overtaking, pedestrians, and speeding were the main causes behind these traffic accidents, said the source.

Road accidents: 8 killed, 29 injured in 24 hours

ALGIERS- Eight people lost their lives and twenty-nine others were injured in 19 road accidents in several provinces of the country over the past 24 hours, said Monday the Civil Protection.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Tiaret, where five people were killed and twenty-one others were injured when a bus carrying them skidded off the road, said the source.

Road accidents: 9 killed, 37 injured since Thursday

ALGIERS - Nine people were killed and thirty-seven others were injured in nine traffic accidents recorded countrywide during the period from October 9 to 11, said Saturday Civil Defence in a report set Saturday.

         The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Mascara, with three dead following a collision between a small vehicle and a truck occurred on the east-west highway, at the Zaghloul locality, commune of Zahana, the same source added.

         In addition, three people (one man, one woman and one child) died burned and another one had second degree burns in Oran, following a fire that broke out in two apartments on the first floor of a building, located at 11 Rue Lamertine (commune of Oran).

         During the same period, the members of civil society evacuated a 22 year old man died drowned at sea, in the beach of El Kharouba in Annaba, the source added.

Road accidents: 10 dead, 27 injured in 24 hours

ALGIERS- Ten people were killed and 27 others injured in twenty road accidents which occurred Sunday throughout the national territory, said Monday the National Gendarmerie in a communiqué.

These accidents also caused important material damage to 32 means of transport, said the communiqué.

The heaviest toll was recorded in the province of Chlef with four people dead, added the source.

Road accidents: 89 killed, 682 injured in one week

ALGIERS- A total of 89 people were killed and 682 others were injured nationwide in road accidents that occurred between September 30 and October 6, said Wednesday the National Gendarmerie.

Ain Defla tops the list with 21 accidents, followed by Boumerdes (18 accidents), Medea and Setif (17), Bejaia (16) and Tebessa (15).

 

Road accidents: 16 killed, 81 injured in two days

ALGIERS – Sixteen people lost their lives and 81 others were killed in 32 road accidents nationwide during the past two days, said Friday the National Gendarmerie in a communiqué.

A Tunisian national was killed and three others of the same nationality were injured in these accidents, said the source.

These accidents also caused huge material damage to 49 vehicles, the source added.

Algeria to partake in UN meeting on maternal, newborn health

ALGIERS-Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women's affairs, Mounia Meslem Si Ameur will represent Algeria at the works of the High Level Meeting on "Maternal and newborn health beyond 2014" , scheduled for Monday in New York (USA), the ministry of National Solidarity said Sunday.

The main objective of the meeting, the same source added, is to "renew the commitment to maternal health and adolescent girls, and to mobilize political leaders to invest in strategic partnerships that will boost the progress of this field in Africa."

The meeting is organized by the African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), in collaboration with the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).

Meslem Si Ameur will also participate Tuesday in a workshop meant to strengthen the capacity of African First Ladies in the field of health.
