ANNABA – Eleven would-be immigrants were intercepted Monday morning by a coastguard patrol 15 miles off Ras El Hamra (Annaba, 600-km east of Algiers), said the regional command of Coastguards.
The illegal migrants, aged between 18 and 32, are all from the eastern province of Annaba. They set sail aboard a makeshift boat from Ras el Hamra early on Monday in an attempt to reach the European coasts, said the source.
They have been brought before the state prosecutor to Annaba court after they underwent medical examinations, said the source.
Thirteen other "harragas (illegal immigrants) were intercepted in similar conditions a week ago, added the source.
A total of 185 would-be immigrants were arrested off Annaba coasts since the beginning of the year.
