16 would-be immigrants intercepted in Annaba

ANNABA (Algeria)- Sixteen illegal immigrants were intercepted Sunday 15 miles northeast of Ras El Hamra, Annaba (600-km east of Algiers), and brought before the court for illegal immigration attempt, a legal source said.

The arrested people, from the province of Annaba, are aged between 17 and 43 years old (including two minors).

They put out to sea from Oued Begrat Beach, aboard a makeshift boat in a bid to join the Mediterranean northern shore.

A total of 307 would-be immigrants have been intercepted off Annaba coast, in similar circumstances, since the beginning of 2015.
