Algeria achieves positive results in prisoners’ rehabilitation, human rights protection, says Felioune

ALGIERS- Algeria has achieved “positive results” in terms of social rehabilitation of prisoners and protection of human rights as well as in terms of cooperation with the representatives of the civil society, said Tuesday, in Algiers, Director General of Prison Services Mokhtar Felioune.

In his speech in an international seminar on “the best international and regional practices in the treatment of prisoners and their rehabilitation,” organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Felioune said that “Algeria has made positive results in terms if social rehabilitation of prisoners and protection of human rights as well as in terms of cooperation with the representatives of the civil society.”

The director general said that these “positive results” allowed UNDP and other international organizations to “share the Algerian experience which is an example to be followed by the countries which work for the improvement of the conditions of their prisons as part of the South-South cooperation.”

In this regard, he underlined the “deep” reforms in this field through the amendment of the criminal procedure code, notably the immediate trial and the electronic bracelet, as an alternative to the remand in custody, in addition to the action for the general interest, implemented since 2009 and which strengthened, according to him, the “presumption of innocence.”
