ALGIERS- Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Abdelwahab Nouri underlined Monday in Algiers the need to set up a national plan to preserve the vegetation resources and involve the citizen in this operation, as he is the key element likely to prevent forest fires.
In a meeting of the National Forest Protection Committee, Nouri said that “forest wealth in Algeria is threatened, requiring additional measures for its protection, as it is a crucial element to preserving the environmental and ecological equilibrium and a major economic source.”
According to data, more than 13,000 hectares of forests were burnt in 2013, said the minister, adding that the measures which were taken during the previous years to face fires and diseases affected 300,000 hectares.
The ministry took the necessary measures to fight against forest fires in 2014 in collaboration with Interior Ministry, represented by the general direction of civil protection and the concerned parties.
As part of this campaign, maintenance operations of the forests entrances as well as other measures have been launched.
